Conservation Finance: Hope for the future but a high bar for access

This June, I had the privilege to participate in the Conservation Finance Network’s (CFN) annual bootcamp, which has been running since 2007 and is designed to increase the ability of conservation professionals to apply innovative and effective funding and financing strategies to their work. Over the course of the week, I was introduced to a wide variety of funding opportunities and tools, many of which can be blended (or “mushed,” as our friend Peter Stein often says) to ultimately activate lots of different dollars for land and natural resource conservation.  

I was blown away by the wealth of options, from federal grant programs to forest carbon markets to payments for ecosystem services. I was also a little overwhelmed by the complexity of many of the opportunities—especially those with the highest returns. As I listened to different experts and heard about case studies from across the U.S., the possibilities both excited and discouraged me. Many of these financing mechanisms, and the processes for accessing and mobilizing them, felt like they’d be out of reach for the community- and Tribal-led groups with whom my own work so often intersects.  

Sometimes that inaccessibility is driven by how funds are allocated (or not). For example, the Forest Service’s Forest Legacy Program awarded a total of $5.5 million in its latest round of grants, but less than $500,000 of those funds when to Tribes. Sometimes, inaccessibility is a function of how much capacity a group needs to apply for funds. With something like the Natural Resource Conservation Service’s Regional Conservation Partnership program, the application often takes up to a year to complete and may require ongoing consultation with overextended federal employees or expensive consultants—with no guarantee of funding at the finish line. Other times, grants require a match to be eligible, or impact investors want to see a group demonstrate existing assets to offset liability. With all these funding options, a would-be recipient needs significant time, expertise, and relationships to be competitive, and even when those stars align, you’re up against dozens of other fund-seekers for a limited pool of resources.

Despite these barriers, I did come away from the bootcamp feeling hopeful for the future of funding conservation in new, different, and better ways. Leigh Whelpton, with Connecticut Green Bank, reflected on how innovative policy approaches can animate dollars for conservation. One example that stood out to me was the state of Connecticut’s ongoing efforts to create “resiliency improvement districts” via a ballot measure, which would deploy tax revenues toward assessments, data collection, and project implementation to address community-level climate change vulnerabilities. The measure did not pass in the most recent election, but its advocates have not given up. In the meantime, decision-makers must continue to consider how the inherently tax-base-dependent benefits of these districts can also be realized in less affluent communities (e.g., wealthy communities pay more in taxes, so a new tax will generate more dollars for those communities and less dollars for lower-income communities), who are typically more vulnerable to the impacts of climate change. 

A trend toward “community navigator” programs was also highlighted: groups with a combination of capacity, expertise, and strong frontline relationships are stepping in to ensure Tribes, Indigenous groups, and other community-led entities have an equitable opportunity to access funding resources. 

The First National Development Institute, for example, is partnering with the Forest Service to increase Tribes’ access to Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) and related Bipartisan Infrastructure Law (BIL) programs and opportunities. Outside of the bootcamp, I’ve also recently encountered others stepping into this navigator role. Native Americans in Philanthropy is supporting Tribal-led applicants to the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation, and Theodore Roosevelt Conservation Partnership is creating a position to support groups seeking funding for conservation work in the Rio Grande. 

It also gave me hope to see that I wasn’t the only person in attendance with the goal of creating a multiplier effect for the resources and expertise showcased at the bootcamp, and that CFN is recruiting and supporting participants with that intention. The Walton Family Foundation and Global Conservation Solutions were just a few of the other organizations represented at the bootcamp with the same purpose of learning more to better support their grantees and clients.  

My own goal in participating was to deepen my knowledge about conservation finance so that I can ultimately re-deploy that expertise for the benefit of the Salazar Center’s Peregrine Accelerator participants. By introducing them to new funding opportunities via our curriculum and connecting them with some of the other experts I met through the bootcamp, they will be better prepared to pursue, diversify, and maximize dollars for their on-the-ground conservation solutions. It’s a privilege to serve as this kind of conveyance for the incredible groups whose work we support through the Peregrine Accelerator. As I look to the field more broadly, I’m excited that we’re now part a growing network of like-minded organizations that are navigating—and empowering others to navigate—a complex and changing funding landscape, no matter what it looks like.

Collaborate like a pollinator!

It’s fat and sassy bee season in Colorado! The wildflowers in the Rockies are unfurling and flaunting their sweetness, and the region’s pollinators are gorging themselves on nectar and pollen.  Just take a look at this beautiful Hunt bumblebee (bombus huntii), spotted on her spring sip-fest in Golden.

It’s Pollinator Week across North America and we have a ‘thing’ for pollinators at the Salazar Center.  Did you know that pollinators—including bees, bats, and butterflies—provide one out of three bites of the food we eat?  Or that 90 percent of wild plants and 75 percent of leading global crops depend on animal pollination?  Pollinators are a keystone species, which means many other species would be hard-pressed to survive without them, including us!  For example, pollinators ensure full crop harvests and produce nearly $20 billion worth of products annually.  They are instrumental in seed production for the thousands of species of flowering plants growing within forests, prairies, wetlands, farmland, and cities.  Pollinators also are climate heros. By nesting underground, particularly in arid regions, they provide soil aeration and water retention.  By fertilizing native plants, they support root systems that hold the soil in place and habitats for multiple species that maintain soil variability and nutrient richness. In effect, they sustain entire ecosystems that can help protect us from climate impacts.  As small as they are, pollinators play a gigantic role in making sure we have a sustainable food supply and healthy, climate-resilient landscapes, even in cities.   

You could say that the superpower of pollinators is cross-sector collaboration.   

I was recently reminded that collaboration is a human superpower too. As a roundtable moderator at the National Civic League’s All-America City Awards in Denver, I was inspired and energized by the stories of multiple cities across the U.S. that are employing collaboration and civic engagement to improve the lives of their citizens. United in place and with a will to solve problems, city employees, council members, police officers, fire fighters, business leaders, teachers, students, and nonprofits are working together to achieve economic vitality, public safety, food security, and climate resilience.  These problem-solvers have no time for silos, hierarchies, or polarization. Instead, what I heard, and what gave me hope for our future, is that through the shared process of defining and achieving their goals, each city became a real community. The simple act of participation—much like pollination—unleashes creativity, an awareness of belonging, powerful solutions, and the magic of life in association.   

At the Salazar Center, we work to build spaces to ignite such collaboration. For example, our Plants for Parks, Pollinators and People project is co-creating research with the City of Denver, the Mola Lab at Colorado State University, and low-income communities to determine how and where to increase and connect pollinator habitats in a way that works for Denver citizens, increases their access to nature, and improves the City’s climate resiliency.  Our Peregrine Accelerator for Conservation Impact champions and invests in ideas and partnerships in important bioregions across North America that can lead to outsized conservation outcomes benefitting benefit people and nature—including bats, agave, and rural ejidatarios in Mexico —and that brings innovators together to build power and accelerate change.   

Nature is a grand, majestic endeavor that depends on successful, lasting collaboration among its many species, including the human species. Let’s take a clue from the humble bumblebee and collaborate like a pollinator.

Juneteenth: Celebrating Black Environmental Leaders and Their Legacy

Juneteenth, celebrated on June 19th, marks a pivotal moment in American history when the last enslaved African Americans were emancipated in 1865. As we honor this day of freedom and reflection, we reflect on the contributions of Black leaders who have shaped and continue to shape the environmental movement. From pioneering conservationists who have dedicated their lives to protecting natural landscapes to tireless advocates for environmental justice who strive to ensure equitable access to clean air, water, and land, these influential figures remind us that the fight for justice extends beyond social and economic realms into the very fabric of our environment. Join us as we celebrate the achievements and legacies of just a few remarkable individuals who have driven change for a more sustainable future for us all.  

Dr. Mustafa Santiago Ali
Environmental justice leader and Vice President of Environmental Justice, Climate, and Community Revitalization at the National Wildlife Federation 

Dr. Ali has been a prominent figure in the environmental justice movement for decades. He was the Assistant Associate Administrator for Environmental Justice at the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). His work addresses environmental and health disparities in marginalized communities, advocating for policies prioritizing equity and community empowerment. He works with several Fortune 500 companies as they journey towards becoming 21st-century organizations, focused on integrating justice and equity into their respective programs, policies, and activities. Dr. Ali participated in the Center’s 2020 International Symposium, giving a keynote address on climate resilience, environmental justice, community revitalization, and how we can shift our cities from “surviving to thriving.”  

 

MaVynee Betsch 
Environmentalist and activist  

Known affectionately as the “Beach Lady,” MaVynee Betsch was a passionate environmentalist and advocate for African American heritage preservation. She descended from a long line of community leaders: her great-grandfather, A.L. Lewis, founded the Afro-American Life Insurance Company, becoming Florida’s first Black millionaire. She dedicated her life to preserving American Beach, a historic African American community in Florida, and raising awareness about environmental issues affecting minority communities. Former Florida Senator Bill Nelson described Betsch as “a recognized leader in preserving land and history in the South.” She campaigned against the development of “NaNa Dune,” part of the tallest dune system of Florida’s Atlantic Coast, which the National Park Service now owns. Her activism inspired generations to protect natural and cultural heritage.  

 

Dr. Robert Bullard 
Founding director of the Bullard Center for Environmental and Climate Justice and distinguished professor of urban planning and environmental policy at Texas Southern University  

As a distinguished urban planning and environmental policy professor at Texas Southern University, Dr. Bullard has pioneered research on environmental justice and race. He is the author of eighteen books that address environmental racism, urban land use, housing, transportation, sustainability, smart growth, climate justice, and community resilience. and is often called the “Father of Environmental Justice.” Dr. Bullard’s work has influenced policymaking and raised awareness about the intersection of race, poverty, and the environment.  

 

Majora Carter 
Urban revitalization strategy consultant, real estate developer, MacArthur Fellow, and Peabody Award-winning broadcaster  

Majora Carter is an urban revitalization strategist known for her pioneering work in sustainable development and environmental justice. She founded Sustainable South Bronx, an organization focused on green job creation and community development. She wrote a successful $1.25M Federal Transportation planning grant to design the South Bronx Greenway – an 11-mile network of bike and pedestrian paths that connects neighborhoods to the riverfront, local entrepreneurship opportunities, and active living features that improve public health and reduce traffic congestion. Her initiatives have transformed marginalized urban areas into thriving, environmentally sustainable communities, demonstrating the potential for inclusive green development.  

 

Dr. Ayana Elizabeth Johnson 
Marine biologist, policy expert, writer, and co-founder of Urban Ocean Lab  

With a Ph.D. in marine biology from Scripps Institution of Oceanography, Dr. Johnson’s work spans marine conservation, policy, and climate change. She co-founded Urban Ocean Lab, a think tank focused on coastal cities, and is a co-creator of the All We Can Save Project, amplifying the voices of women climate leaders. Recently, she co-authored the Blue New Deal, a roadmap for including the ocean in climate policy. Her next book, “What if We Get It Right?” which will be published this summer, is a collection of interviews with leaders from various fields about promising climate possibilities. Dr. Johnson advocates for marine conservation with a social justice lens, emphasizing the importance of diverse perspectives in environmental conversations.  

  

Vanessa Nakate
Climate justice activist and Founder of Rise Up Climate Movement  

Vanessa Nakate’s conservation leadership began with a small protest on the streets of Kampala to draw attention to the climate emergency and destruction of the Congo Rainforest. As her message spread across Uganda and beyond, she founded the Rise Up Movement, to amplify the voices of activists from across Africa. In 2022, she was appointed UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador and has addressed world leaders at multiple climate summits. At the 2023 UN Climate Change Conference, she urged delegates to put people first instead of profits, to make polluters pay, to cancel debt and direct climate finance toward the most vulnerable countries that did not create the climate crisis, while making sure fossil fuels are not part of their development. Her activism has brought attention to the voices of young activists from the Global South and the need for urgent action on climate change. 

  

Dr. Jacqueline Patterson 
Senior Director of the NAACP Environmental and Climate Justice Program and Founder and Executive Director of The Chisholm Legacy Project  

Dr. Patterson leads the NAACP Environmental and Climate Justice Program, advocating for policies addressing environmental and climate injustices. She focuses on the disproportionate impacts of pollution and climate change on marginalized communities, working to amplify their voices in policy discussions. She named her ­organization after Shirley Chisholm to reflect her intersectional approach. The first Black woman elected to Congress strongly advocated uniting fragmented social movements. Dr. Patterson’s work highlights the interconnectedness of environmental issues with social justice and human rights. “Economy, food, housing, transit—all of these are civil rights issues,” she says. “And climate issues ­intersect with every single one.”  

 

Dr. Samuel Ramsey 
Founder and director of The Ramsey Research Foundation, Professor of entomology, and National Geographic Explorer  

Described as “your friendly neighborhood entomologist,” Dr. Ramsey is the endowed professor of entomology at the University of Colorado Boulder, where he teaches about effective communication and how understanding the deep interconnectedness of all organisms can solve real-world problems. He is also the founder of The Ramsey Research Foundation, which conducts cutting-edge, novel research on issues affecting pollinator health globally — including parasite spread, disease management, and habitat preservation. He has utilized his exceptional skillset working in academia, industry, and government — including alongside the U.S. Supreme Court, House of Representatives, and the United States Department of Agriculture.  

 

Dr. Dorceta Taylor 
Scholar, professor at the Yale School for the Environment, and environmental sociologist  

Dr. Taylor is a professor at the Yale School of the Environment and a leading scholar in environmental sociology. Her research examines the social dimensions of environmental issues, focusing on racial and gender disparities in access to resources and environmental decision-making. Her most recent book, The Rise of the American Conservation Movement:  Power, Privilege, and Environmental Protection, was published in 2016 during the 100th anniversary of the founding of the National Park Service.  The book examines how conservation ideas and politics are tied to social dynamics such as racism, classism, and gender discrimination. Dr. Taylor’s work sheds light on the lack of diversity in environmental organizations and offers insights into creating more inclusive environmental movements.  

 

Leah Thomas 
Environmental writer and intersectional environmental activist   

Known as the “GreenGirlLeah,” Leah Thomas is a prominent voice in the intersectional environmental movement. She uses her platform to advocate for environmental justice and inclusivity in the outdoors. She co-founded “Intersectional Environmentalist,” a platform that promotes diversity and equity in the environmental movement. As a Daughters For Earth Advisory Circle member, a new campaign to mobilize women worldwide to support and fund women-led efforts to protect and restore the Earth, she advocates for everyone to join in the fight against climate change. Her work emphasizes the importance of addressing systemic inequalities to achieve environmental sustainability.

World Oceans Day: Protecting our oceans by conserving sea turtles

Growing up in the coastal state of Baja California Sur, Mexico, my main access to nature was the ocean, and I was lucky enough to live in an area with some of the richest marine biodiversity in the world. Eighty percent of marine mammals in the Pacific Ocean come to feed near my hometown in the Sea of California, with up to 40 blue whales feeding in a single location – imagine the ocean’s productivity delivering tons of krill, their only prey! 

The ocean supported my family’s livelihood. My grandfather was the captain of two fishing boats and my grandmother was the president of the local fish cooperative. I have vivid memories of my uncle taking me out on his fishing boat five miles off the coast where we would watch loggerhead turtles rise to the surface. When multitudes of loggerheads surfaced simultaneously, bubbles would form in the water, and we would watch the ocean “boil.” 

We didn’t know it at the time, but this phrase – “watching the ocean boil” – that we used figuratively would one day become literal. And the many sea turtles that I loved watching would dwindle in numbers over time. 

Today, climate change sets and then breaks records for the hottest ocean temperatures, pollution and disease spread plastic and sickness to marine species, and beach erosion destroys habitats along coastlines. The oceans are in trouble because of human impacts, and only 7.5% of marine habitats (the size of North America) are protected, leaving ecosystems and the species that depend on them vulnerable. 

All seven species of sea turtles are currently endangered. Sea turtles reflect the presence of environmental contaminants and emerging infectious diseases, making them sentinel species. Because sea turtles occupy both land and sea, they move in and out of infected or polluted areas and spread pathogens and contaminants geographically and through the food chain.  

I have been fortunate enough to study sea turtles and their pathogens throughout my career as a wildlife veterinarian and later as a wildlife epidemiologist. I have traveled worldwide to study foxes in Patagonia, manatees in Belize, La Plata dolphins in Argentina, and sea turtles in Australia, Hawaii, and Mexico.  

While in Hawaii in the ‘90s, I encountered a disease called fibro papillomatosis, a tumor that causes lesions in the skin and appendages on internal organs. Some of those tumors may become malignant as fibrosacomas in the tomium of sea turtles, ultimately growing into their bones. This disease is not limited to populations found off the coast of Hawaii; it has been documented across all oceans in Australia, Florida, Brazil, Chile, Southeast Asia, and Western Africa. This is likely because sea turtles have some of the largest migratory routes of marine animals, meaning any disease they carry has the potential for pantropical distribution. 

I also observed sea turtles returning year after year to the beaches where they were born to lay their eggs. A female sea turtle can lay 100 eggs at a time and 1,000-10,000 eggs in a season; yet, only one out of those hatchlings will make it to adulthood.  

Not only does beach erosion make it difficult for females to find areas to lay their eggs, but light pollution also impacts newly hatched sea turtles, obscuring their way to the ocean and leaving them more vulnerable to predators like gulls and crabs. If a hatchling does make it into the ocean and survives to adulthood, there’s a good chance that it will be illegally harvested or caught in nets that aren’t meant for it. 

This phenomenon – called bycatch – is one of the biggest threats to marine life, especially the loggerhead turtle. Fishers often use large fishing nets that stretch a mile across the water to maximize their catch. However, sea turtles and other unwanted marine species can easily get caught in these nets, and unable to free themselves, they eventually drown and wash up to the beach. 

Given these hosts of problems that sea turtles face, it is no surprise that this species is in trouble, and if the sea turtle is in trouble, then our oceans are in trouble. So, what can we do about it?  

As a conservationist, I’ve tried all sorts of solutions, including writing to the Mexican government, asking them to do something about bycatch; working with groups who have introduced a technique to monitor sea turtle bycatch, the Turtle Excluder Device, that allows fishers to avoid sea turtles in their nets; and assisting nonprofits, including Sea Turtle Conservation Network of Californias, to tackle conservation issues. But still, these actions are not enough. 

One of the reasons why sea turtle conservation has been so difficult to manage is culture. In Latin America, see turtle meat and eggs are believed to act as aphrodisiacs if consumed. Even as a young child, my grandfather used to make me drink sea turtle blood for medicinal reasons. Despite Mexico outlawing sea turtle consumption in the 1990s and creative marketing campaigns creating stigmas against sea turtle consumption, many coastal residents continue to eat sea turtles.  

Oceans connect all of us, so the best way to tackle this issue is through transdisciplinary solutions that are supported by the public, stakeholders, and decision-makers and can be enacted on global and local levels. Recently, through One Health, I have worked on a campaign that combines education, conservation and human health. By demonstrating the dangers of eating sea turtles – which include ingesting heavy metals and toxins that can lead to cancer – the hope is that the public will stop eating sea turtles.  

I look forward to measuring the outcomes of this new campaign, but in the meantime, on World Oceans Day and every day, I hope we can all continue to learn more about marine species, improve our policies to address harmful human impacts on our oceans, and explore new depths together. 

Sea turtles are telling us what’s happening to the oceans, and it’s time we listen. The health of our marine environment depends on it.

Celebrating biodiversity action – conservation works; we should do more of it!

At the heart of everything we do at The Salazar Center is finding equitable and inclusive solutions to reversing the loss of biodiversity. So, we love a good excuse to elevate and celebrate nature’s critical role in our lives. In this light, the International Day of Biodiversity resonates deeply with our values.  For almost a quarter century, the United Nations has gathered the world to celebrate this day with the sole intent of increasing our collective understanding and awareness of biodiversity.

Supporting conservation work that protects and restores biodiversity matters. Recent studies have found that globally, almost $44 trillion of economic value generation – over half the world’s total GDP – is moderately or highly dependent on nature. Biodiversity loss is also deeply linked to human health worldwide. And yet, sometimes doing the work of conservation can feel daunting, even Sisyphean. That is why we were so encouraged to see the results from a recent meta-analysis of over 180 conservation interventions published in Science. The researchers found that in two-thirds of cases, the interventions either improved biodiversity or slowed declines. Not only did they find that the interventions were effective, but they also had large, measurable impacts.  

A few things really stood out to me as I read this article. First, the results were not restricted to one type of conservation intervention. Impact was found across a spectrum of project types. Similarly, the positive impact was not restricted to one geography or ecosystem type. This shows that the tools that are already in our toolbox can and should be deployed in more places.  Results such as this show that our work is not Sisyphean, and there are solid, science-backed reasons to keep doing the work. Turns out conservation works, and we should do more of it! 

But as we consider how to scale up the conservation work necessary to halt and reverse biodiversity loss, we need to think about doing more of it in a way that centers people and the expertise embedded in local communities. We heard this clarion call repeatedly at our last International Symposium on Conservation Impact.  When we work to convene conservation thought leaders or work to build the capacity of practitioners to lift their projects off the ground, we are always working with that lens in mind.  We believe that getting to durable conservation solutions can only happen when the people on the ground – from all walks of life – are heard, empowered, and have the resources to make change happen.   

This year’s International Day of Biodiversity theme is “Be Part of the Plan”. This represents a call to action for everyone around the globe to do something – big or small – to contribute to protecting biodiversity. We could not agree more! But everyone needs to be part of the plan and our policies and funding need to recognize, incentivize and support that vision of inclusive action.

The United Nations has proclaimed May 22 the International Day for Biological Diversity (IDB) to increase understanding and awareness of biodiversity issues. When first created by the Second Committee of the UN General Assembly in late 1993, 29 December (the date of entry into force of the Convention of Biological Diversity), was designated The International Day for Biological Diversity. In December 2000, the UN General Assembly adopted 22 May as IDB, to commemorate the adoption of the text of the Convention on 22 May 1992 by the Nairobi Final Act of the Conference for the Adoption of the Agreed Text of the Convention on Biological Diversity. This was partly done because it was difficult for many countries to plan and carry out suitable celebrations for the date of 29 December, given the number of holidays that coincide around that time of year.

Connecting to local landscapes from a new perspective

When Alex Hager, a KUNC reporter covering the Colorado River basin, asks if you want to go for a ride with EcoFlight, you don’t pass up the opportunity. My chance arose earlier this year when Alex was capturing photos for a piece he was working on regarding the sale of the water rights for the Shoshone Power Plant in Glenwood Canyon to the Colorado River Water Conservation District (check out his story here!). The purchase of these water rights, if funding is secured, will keep the water in the river in perpetuity, ensuring ecological flows for a wide diversity of species, some endangered, whose survival is dependent on a healthy and well-conserved river. EcoFlight is a non-profit dedicated to educating and advocating for the protection of wild places through the use of small aircraft, and opening people’s eyes to landscapes and the importance of goals such as 30×30. 

On top of learning about this incredible initiative, I used the opportunity to get into that tiny plane and reflect on a place that is near and dear to my heart, the Roaring Fork Valley of Colorado. I have spent the last 6 years living and recreating here, and though I have flown above what locals refer to as “the valley” in large commercial planes, never had I gotten to see this home from this wild perspective.  

Two things stuck out to me as we were in flight: 

  1. How lucky and privileged I am to live in a place with huge swaths of land conserved publicly and privately, because of countless individuals, organizations, and partnerships committed to protecting the landscapes. 
  2. How deeply connected the Roaring Fork Valley is to the greater Colorado river system that supplies water for some 35 million people across the West.

I would like to acknowledge that the Roaring Fork Valley is the traditional homelands of the Ute Indian People, who were forcefully removed in the 1800’s following the rapid colonization of the area due to the abundance of minerals such as silver.

The Roaring Fork Valley of Colorado is an approximately 70-mile and 928,640 acre landscape that begins west of the Continental divide of Independence Pass, and proceeds to flow through Aspen, Basalt, Carbondale, and Glenwood Springs, before joining the mighty Colorado river flowing west across the United States and into Mexico. According to a study done by the Colorado Natural Heritage Program in 2022, the area is “one of the most ecologically intact and varied landscapes in Colorado.” Our flight began at the Aspen airport and flew us down the valley to eventually circle the Colorado river flowing through Glenwood Canyon. Though this is one of the most rapidly growing areas in Colorado, it was remarkable to witness the vast swaths of public land that surround the valley, providing critical habitat for wildlife, recreation opportunities for residents and visitors alike, and vital ecosystem services.  

As a region that is defined by its abundance of outdoor recreation opportunities, and a long history of ranching and land stewardship, the local populace is exemplary in their passion for conserving these landscapes. One of my favorite stories is of the “Maroon Belles,” a trio of women who came together in the 1960s to advocate for conservation, and eventually “influenced or were directly responsible for 500,000 acres of wilderness designation in or around the Roaring Fork Valley.” Today, there are a plethora of organizations working to conserve biodiversity and build climate resilience for the region, some of my favorites include the Roaring Fork Conservancy, the Roaring Fork Valley Wildfire Collaborative, Watershed Biodiversity Initative, Wilderness Workshop, Aspen Valley Land Trust, the Aspen Center for Environmental Studies, and many more. Though the Roaring Fork Valley faces challenges ranging from high socio-economic inequalities, the historical exclusion of the Ute tribe from the region, climate change, invasive species, and rapid development, I am optimistic that these landscapes will be around for years to come, thanks to the tireless efforts of organizations and residents to protect them.  

 

Part of something greater

It was impossible to sit in the plane and not think about how each bit of snow that falls throughout the winter has the potential to end up 1,450 miles away in Mexico, once the Roaring Fork River joins the Colorado River. It can be tempting to solely focus on local environmental effects and challenges but remembering that the Roaring Fork Valley is part of a larger system stressed the importance of maintaining these landscapes for the wellbeing of humans and ecosystems across the West. 

One of the programs I work on at the Salazar Center is the Peregrine Accelerator for Conservation Impact, a funding and capacity building program designed to advance new conservation solutions in priority ecoregions across North America. The goal of focusing the program in a defined and connected region is to build cohesion among a cohort of practitioners working together to protect a similar resource, despite being separated by large distances. For the pilot year of this program, we focused our efforts on the Rio Grande-Rio Bravo basin, an 1,885-mile river that begins in the San Luis Valley of Colorado, flows through two more U.S. States, and into Mexico before ending in the Gulf of Mexico.  

The impact of each tributary and landscape on the Rio Grande-Rio Bravo system is profound, highlighting the need for landscape level conservation from headwaters to delta. The same is true of the Colorado river basin, as we have witnessed in recent years as the impacts of climate change, landscape change, and overallocation of water has caused intense stress on water resources across the watershed.  

Intact ecosystems are critical for maintaining our water resources, and as the West experiences warmer temperatures and a reduced snowpack, it is ever more critical that conservation of nature is prioritized to ensure we have secure water resources into the future. Mountain communities like the Roaring Fork Valley are undergoing population increases and development pressure at unprecedented rates. As we balance the need for meeting housing and infrastructure needs with conserving our natural resources, maintaining the vision that we are part of something much bigger than our valley can be a driver for preserving intact landscapes.  

The opportunity to see a place I love from this perspective was profound and impactful. The next time I hike in the Elk Mountain range, or recreate on the Roaring Fork river, I will remember what it looked like from above, and that every step I take, every initiative I vote for, and every one of my choices regarding this land is connected to something bigger than me, and for that I am grateful. Nature-Based Solutions: Healing nature with regenerative ocean farming

Kate Burgess is a Salazar Center partner and serves as NCEL’s Conservation Program Manager, where she enjoys collaborating with legislators on a variety of land, water, wildlife, and human issues. 


My dad and I spend a lot of time surfing.  We mostly go in the winter, not because we’re gluttons for punishment, but because that’s when the swell is allegedly the best on this side of the Atlantic. With our 7 mm wetsuits, booties, mittens, and hoods, we’ve adopted the proxy skin of seals, reminded only of the season when the sea is dusted with snow, or when an icy wave humbles the exposed skin on our face, leaving eyes stinging and heart pumping.

But recently, things have changed. The water in the winter isn’t as cold as it used to be. Last December, I didn’t need my mittens or booties. In the summer, I stopped wearing a wetsuit altogether, worried I’d overheat in the near-bath temperature waters of Nahant Beach that used to induce a sharp inhalation at the dip of a toe. 

Given these obvious impacts of climate change, my dad and I have been thinking about another way to spend our time in the sea: ocean farming. With the dramatic warming of our ocean, we’re wondering what we can do to intervene, and regenerative ocean farming – particularly kelp cultivation – is one nature-based solution with lots of promise.

Kelp acts as a highly effective carbon sink, a natural defense against storms, habitat for species, and can be harvested for animal feed, medicine and actually, a pretty decent beer. It addresses the twin climate and biodiversity crises concomitantly, since they are inextricably linked and need to be addressed as such.

Nature based solutions (NBS) like planting kelp are a means of leveraging the innate power and potential in earth’s systems, flora and fauna, and using them to promote resilience. Many of these solutions – including, for example, prescribed burns and oyster reef restoration – have been developed and practiced by Indigenous communities since time immemorial. Without proper recognition, consent for use of knowledge, compensation, and centralization of Indigenous leadership, nature based solutions can become anti-Indigenous, and an extension of the violent and racist colonialism that has and continues to persist in the environmental movement and beyond. Thoughtful consideration of the use of NBS is vital. 

These solutions are gaining momentum among communities, practitioners, decision makers, academics, and beyond, and I believe wholeheartedly that they’re one of the best means of making any real dent in recovering species and regulating our climate. 

One way that I’m seeing NBS rise is at the state level. My job as Conservation Program Manager with the National Caucus of Environmental Legislators (NCEL) is to track land, water, and wildlife policies, share lessons learned with legislators across the U.S., and help them utilize the best available science and knowledge systems to advance equitable environmental policies. In 2023 alone, hundreds of state bills including NBS were introduced as a means of utilizing nature’s strengths as a solution to climate change and biodiversity loss.

State legislatures are essentially policy ‘test kitchens,’ except with less salt and no Guy Fieri. They’re where innovative measures can be piloted and repeated in other states, and ultimately with enough traction, at the federal and even international levels. States can set, maintain, and/or dismantle important legal narratives – especially when it comes to environmental issues. 

For example, Montana’s recent Supreme Court win for youth was largely the result of a rights-to-nature state policy called the “Green Amendment” that was enacted in 1970. Green Amendments are environmental justice tools that solidify our rights to clean air, water, and a healthy environment, putting them on par with our other fundamental civil liberties like free speech. A powerful means of securing health for present and future generations, Green Amendments are picking up speed; in 2023, 13 states introduced Green Amendments, and New York became the first state to enact one since 1971.  

With the recent Sackett SCOTUS decision gutting the Clean Water Act, experts say it’s up to states to “step in and fill the void.” With federal protection absent, states are tasked with playing defense for wetlands protection, a habitat coined “earth’s kidneys,” due to their tremendous capacity to filter toxins and sustain life for countless species.  

The potential of and pressure on States to play environmental offense and defense is high, but rarely is their capacity. Some, like New Mexico, Vermont, and Nevada (among others) are citizen legislatures, which means lawmakers have full-time year-round jobs on top of being a legislator, and many lack staff, compensation, or even a physical office. U.S. territories lack voting representatives in Congress, so what happens at the state/territory level matters immensely when federal representation is lacking.   

States are also treaty partners and have a unique government-to-government relationship with and responsibility to honor the sovereignty of Tribal Nations. Efforts like returning land back, supporting the rematriation of climate keystone wildlife like buffalo, and designing policies that require Free, Prior, and Informed Consent are essential in conjunction with designing state NBS. Indigenous communities are the original stewards of what is now known as the United States, and both traditional and contemporary ecological knowledge are some of the strongest tools available when it comes to bringing flora and fauna back, and regulating our climate – as long as that knowledge is respected and compensated.  

Ultimately, my colleagues and I at NCEL try to fill in where capacity is lacking in state legislatures, calling ourselves “remote environmental staff.” We have a 30,000’ view of what’s happening on environmental state policy level on issues relating to, and are at the ready to provide research, briefings, connections to other states and best available science and knowledge systems, anything to help make their jobs easier. Federal efforts like the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, Inflation Reduction Act, and the Nature-Based Solutions Roadmap have helped make clear the trend towards prioritizing NBS and the onus on States and partners for implementation.

As state trends on nature based solutions continue to rise, we’ll continue to equip lawmakers with the best available science and knowledge/thinking as a means of addressing the twin crises of climate change and biodiversity loss. My dad and I are grateful for nature’s potential to heal, and we’ll join you in doing all we can to help sustain its gifts for future generations of surfers and beyond.

Five years of Symposia: Reflecting on how we got to where we are today

The Salazar Center is preparing to host its annual International Symposium on Conservation Impact next month (there’s still time to register!), and I have the unique perspective of being part of every symposia to date.  

A lot has happened in the past five years—within the Center itself, with regard to climate change and biodiversity loss and inequity in North America, and in my own work as part of this team—so when I was asked to reflect on the history of this event, how it’s evolved, and what connections have sprung up across years and programs, I struggled at first. What could I say that captured five years’ worth of convenings that were shaped not only by our growth as an organization but also by a global pandemic and significant political and cultural upheaval across the continent?  

Then I landed on a microcosm of this year’s event: the breakout sessions, and specifically the session focused on cities and urban environments. This session, which will take place on the second day of the symposium, connects a lot of the dots for me and represents not only the evolution of our convening, but the ways that the work happening in our network is evolving and growing.  

In 2020, the symposium focused on innovative conservation, equity, and resilience efforts across North American’s urban areas. It also served as the launching pad for our Thriving Cities Challenge, which ultimately awarded more than half a million dollars to 15 grassroots project teams across the continent who were working to implement nature-based solutions and deliver community benefits at the intersection of climate resilience, equity, and urban green space.  

It was also announced at the 2020 symposium that the Center would enter into an unprecedented partnership with Denver Parks and Recreation in order to support the city’s efforts to increase community resiliency, urban habitat, and equitable access to green space; this partnership has since resulted in pilot funding for a CSU-led research effort that will culminate next year.  

The urban-focused breakout session this year will bring the topic of nature-based solutions in cities back into focus for the Center, which is a testament to the importance of this conversation in driving a sustainable and equitable future for North America, and the strength of the relationships that we cultivated in our earlier work.

Earlier this year, I had the privilege of reconnecting with colleagues at Groundwork USA and the Trust for Public Land when the Doris Duke Foundation (who’s also a sponsor of this year’s event) convened a small group of its previous grantees who’d run programs that re-granted monies for urban nature work, like our Thriving Cities Challenge. These colleagues, in turn, connected us with two of the experts who will help lead the urban breakout session, Jeremy Hoffman and Jessica Montoya.  

With an eye toward making sure we have expert practitioners in the room for that breakout session, too, we’re bringing many of our Thriving Cities grantees to Denver for the event, creating a unique opportunity to these teams to meet in person after participating in a capacity-building program that was run entire virtually and to have a dedicated space to continue conversations that began in 2021. 

Denver Parks and Recreation, another 2023 symposium sponsor, will also be sending some of their Green Corps members to the event so that they can participate in the urban breakout session.  

This is one of the things about what we do at the Center that deeply energizes me and keeps me coming back day after day: we are all in this together, across sectors and years and geographical boundaries; you only have to tug lightly on one thread to see and feel that it’s deeply interwoven with an incredible community of partners and their work—and I can’t wait to see what new stitches will be sewn at our 2023 symposium and become part of this dynamic, inspiring tapestry in the years to come.

A Seat at the Table: Why Young Leaders Matter in Conservation Convenings

If you follow along with environmental news, you may have seen recent headlines ranging from a group in Montana advocating that the state’s policies violated their constitutional right to a healthy and clean future, to the vandalism of fine art to bring attention to the climate crisis, to Greta Thunberg challenging world leaders at the United Nations Climate Action Summit to do more about climate change. What do these have in common? They feature young leaders around the world who are seeking meaningful, systemic change to ensure a safe and healthy future for themselves and the generations to come. 

Why Young Leaders Matter 

According to the United Nations, the world is home to 1.8 billion young people between the ages of 10 to 24- which is the largest generation of youth in history. Within this generation, there is increasing awareness, frustration, and mobilization of youth demanding world leaders follow through on the promises they are making from local legislation to federal initiatives, all the way to the global stage. A study from the Pew Research Center found that Millennial and Gen-Z Americans stand out “for their high levels of engagement with the issue of climate change,” explained by feelings of anxiety about the future and an urgency to reverse biodiversity loss and carbon emissions. 

As an early career conservationist, myself, on the way out of the bucket determined as “youth”, I am consistently impressed by the creative and innovative ways younger generations are confronting the dual climate and biodiversity crises. Whether through social media, grassroots leadership, academia, driving policy, or becoming globally recognized environmental leaders, it is undeniable that the next generation of environmental leadership is serious about making systemic change. 

Historically, younger generations have been prevented from participating in conversations about the looming environmental crises, even though their futures are more likely to be affected by climate change and biodiversity loss than older generations, despite contributing the least to the crisis. Never has a generation encountered such consistent news that the future they are entitled to is at risk from existential threats to our environment. However, in the face of these devastating headlines, youth have proven themselves to be resilient, thoughtful, and innovative.  

So many groups led by youth have emerged in recent years, demonstrating this generation’s ability to organize. Some of my favorite (but who can choose?!) include the Global Youth Biodiversity Network, Next 100, YEAH-net, CoalitionWILD, Groundwork USA, Environmental Learning for Kids, Youth4Nature, and the Ancestral Lands Conservation Corps. There are so many more groups out there either being led by youth or working to empower and build capacity in younger generations to be effective stewards of the environment.  

Young people have demonstrated repeatedly in recent years that they are willing to do what it takes to ensure the world is habitable going forward through continued advocacy, education, and innovation. As the world reaches a pivotal point in the dual climate and biodiversity crises, it is essential that this new generation of leaders has the capacity to continue, as well as a seat at the table whenever critical conversations are taking place. 

The Salazar Center’s Role 

As part of the Salazar Center’s ongoing mission “to accelerate the pace and scale of equitable, innovative, and durable solutions for nature and all people by connecting diverse leaders, communities, and resources across the North American continent,” we are working hard to ensure that the next generation of leadership is represented at this year’s Symposium on Conservation Impact. This year’s event will bring together diverse thought leaders from across North America to share their insights on how to move beyond individual projects to lasting systemic change that will drive a nature-positive future. Youth and emerging leaders across North America have already demonstrated their desire to shake up the norm, making this the perfect space to engage them. 

To ensure the younger attendees’ voices have a dedicated space to be heard, on the first day of the Symposium we will host a Rising Leader’s Learning and Networking lunch. This will be a space where select attendees identifying as young or emerging leaders will have the opportunity to participate in a session dedicated to understanding the challenges and opportunities for this group to engage in successfully implementing NbS across North America. The lunch will feature local speakers and provide ample opportunities for the group to discuss what a nature positive future led for and by youth looks like. 

Additionally, through our first financial support program, made possible by our generous sponsors and partners, we were able to offer assistance to 15 young conservationists from across North America. They represent sectors from academia, grassroots work, policy, and advocacy, and will come to the Symposium with their valuable perspectives in tow.

Why Convening Matters for Collaborative Conservation: Establishing the building blocks for the politics of problem solving

Lynn Scarlett is a member of the Salazar Center’s External Advisory Board. She is the former Deputy Secretary of the Interior and served as the Global Chief External Affairs Officer for The Nature Conservancy.


Some years ago, while I was Deputy Secretary at the Department of the Interior, I hiked a stretch of trail in Glacier National Park. With others, I then hiked another stretch, crossing the border into Waterton National Park. I savored the magnificence of these two places. I savored the vistas of craggy peaks, the aquamarine glacial lakes, the wetlands rich in wildlife, the meadows golden and shimmering in the wind. I tasted berries, ripe and perfumed. I saw grizzlies—far off across the hillside.

I celebrate the significance of these parks. I celebrate the significance of the partnerships among people, organizations, and governments to lend a caring hand to these places.

Later, after my hikes, I visited ranchers, firefighters, bear biologists, local community leaders, and Tribal and First Nation peoples whose knowledge, lives and livelihoods are linked to lands and waters along this Crown of the Continent. These people, their neighbors, and partners are all engaged in increasingly linked social, environmental, and economic enterprises. These enterprises enhance—not merely sustain—lands, communities, and economies. They enhance resilience in the context of a changing climate. They augment many voices and tap the knowledge of diverse peoples.

These collaborative efforts in large landscape conservation are not easy, but these ventures are broadening across the continent. While I served for nearly 8 years at the U.S Interior Department—first as Assistant Secretary, then as Deputy Secretary—I was privileged to meet with diverse people along the Duck Trap River in Maine, along Winyah Bay in South Carolina, at Las Cienegas in Arizona, the Swan Valley in Montana, and so many other places. Later, in my role at The Nature Conservancy, I met with conservation partners in the Yucatan Peninsula and elsewhere. At each of these places, I spoke with people clustered in constellations of collaboration to conserve places, enhance communities, and strengthen social equity.

As I contemplate this efflorescence of action, this emergence of organizations and their interconnections into larger networks, I am reminded of the words of former US Secretary of the Interior Steward Udall. I am, he said, “a troubled optimist.” As I contemplate communities, conservation, climate action, and landscape-scale collaboration, I guess I, too, am a troubled optimist. I am troubled because the issues are increasingly complex. Headlines of wildland fires and the extent of smoke they generate remind us that the scope of challenges can transcend jurisdictional and property boundaries. The pace of change quickens. Climate change and its effects on land, water, wildlife, and people are vast and varied. Land fragmentation, invasive weeds, water quality and availability, the quest for energy, and the travails of succeeding in a global economy, even the survival of languages and stories and cultures, all challenge us.

Over 100 years ago, scientist and explorer John Wesley Powell observed the intersection of people and nature with a systems lens. Observing interdependencies and interconnections, he concluded: “People must necessarily work together for common purposes within interconnected spaces and places.” Fast forward 120 years, and we see a growing embrace of this vision of interconnections of both people and places. For the past two decades, many communities—in Canada, the United States, and Mexico—reflect what Abraham Lincoln once called “the better angels of our Nature”—our capacity to find common ground in communities as people engage in increasingly linked endeavors to enhance climate resilience, conservation, and social equity. Communities are coalescing in partnered problem solving at larger and larger scales.

It is these efforts that the Salazar Center embraces and is accelerating through symposia and networking and knowledge-building. Through dialogue, the Center explores nature-positive solutions that broaden conservation and climate action to encompass whole ecosystems and engage diverse communities.

In these efforts, we see a deepening recognition that sustaining and restoring natural systems is essential. Nature provides services—water purification, coastal storm surge mitigation, flood protection, temperature regulation, climate change mitigation, and much more. This value invites us to reshape resource management questions. Where and how does reforestation or protection achieve the greatest downstream water quality benefits? How do options for coastal management impact seafood harvest, renewable energy production, and coastal resilience to high-intensity storms? How do agricultural management choices affect the pollination services of nature? What is the implication of thinking about the benefits of nature as we consider conservation priorities, design, and actions?

As we strive, consistent with the Salazar Center mission, “to accelerate the pace and scale of innovative, inclusive, and durable solutions for conservation, climate resilience, and social equity,” what tools and frameworks and decision processes might be relevant? How can we engage in continental opportunities in Mexico, the United States, and Canada?

While collaborative conservation unfolds at many nested scales, sometimes these efforts must consider transboundary linkages. The United States, Canada, and Mexico have intersecting ecosystems, intersecting ecosystem services, and species linked across geographies. Sometimes drivers of environmental change in one country affect the delivery of ecosystem services and human well-being in another country. And the effects of a changing climate span countries.

Climate changes, for example, affect snowpack, the timing of snow melt, precipitation amounts and timing, and temperatures. These can affect the Colorado, Rio Grande and Rio Bravo Rivers, reservoir filling, instream flows, and the timing of life cycle events. All of these, in turn, affect ecosystem functions and the benefits they bring to communities. These interconnecting changes point to the relevance of efforts such as the US-Mexico Transboundary Aquifer Assessment program. They invite us to consider opportunities to think about intersecting Canadian, U.S. and Mexico landscapes, flyways, and waters for wildlife crossings, energy infrastructure, water management, and more.

I see three categories of public policies and decision making important to nurturing efforts in collaborative, large-landscape conservation. First are planning, priority-setting, and evaluation tools like those used in the National Environmental Policy Act in the United States, or the General Ecological Balance and Environmental Protection Act in Mexico, or binational agreements like the Great Lakes Water Quality Agreement. A key consideration is how to extend the boundaries of evaluation beyond individual public land units and how to better consider transboundary issues.Second are regulatory and impact mitigation mechanisms. Conservation banking concepts, for example, provide a potential context for pooling mitigation into large, conserved areas. They have the potential to foster eco-regional or landscape-scale conservation in priority areas. Third are funding programs and other investments that support large-scale, multi-participant efforts. How, for example, might Farm Bill programs in the United States support conservation of high-priority ecosystems, high-value outcomes, greater social equity, and collaborative conservation? Can Farm Bill or other funding programs integrate better with Mexican and Canadian programs?

Salazar Center programs exemplify efforts to facilitate multinational and multiparticipant knowledge-sharing and actions that link people to nature, secure largescale conservation and climate action, and enhance social equity. I have had the great privilege of seeing many relevant efforts across the United States.

I remember a trip a few years ago to western Pennsylvania at Buffalo Creek. There, dozens of farmers, with the Fish and Wildlife Service and a local university, are fencing off miles of streams and riparian areas. They are planting native warm spring grasses. They are installing owl and wood duck boxes, even bat boxes. The results show dramatic reductions of bacteria in water, results that are good for nature—and good for dairy farms. Stream banks now display dense shrubs and brush, bringing habitat for birds and shade cover for fish. But Buffalo Creek manifests another outcome: it is inspiring citizen stewardship.

Twenty-first century conservation success hinges on these collaborative endeavors that benefit people and nature. The tableau, while encouraging, is also a troubled one of deep divides and conflict that can impede investments in science and solutions. But place-based collaborative conservation offers us some hope. These efforts link conservation action to tangible solutions that can benefit all communities. Watershed protection protects drinking water supplies; coastal restoration reduces storm vulnerability, floodplain restoration protects communities, enhancing forest health protects water supplies and reduces risk of catastrophic wildland fires.

Efforts in collaborative conservation remind us that “good decisions” don’t spring merely from “getting the facts straight and getting the science right. Rather, enduring outcomes must be deemed equitable and acceptable to diverse people and communities. A central challenge for conservation is how to provide a rich context for expression of many voices and values—and a means of generating acceptable solutions. This challenge puts a premium on how decision makers—public and private—make choices, communicate information and ideas, and organize and coordinate action. It also puts a premium on knowledge building, yet relevant science is often complex and sometimes uncertain. What will future rainfall patterns be? How will species respond to climate changes?

But there is another dimension of knowledge—local knowledge—that is important to decision making. Collaborative efforts depend upon the knowledge of time, place, circumstance, situation, experience, culture, and tradition. Poet Wallace Stevens once wrote: “Perhaps real truth resides in a walk around the lake.” Local knowledge of experience comes from working and living in communities. Local knowledge helps us define the doable, pinpoint the possible, and think about what’s equitable. Thus, central to collaborative endeavors is how to ensure settings that tap this sort of local knowledge while, also, generating relevant science information. How do collaborative conservation efforts support inclusive dialogue?

Yet assembling all relevant participants is difficult—and involves tremendous investment of time. It also puts a premium on listening. Author William Isaacs once wrote that dialogue is “conversation with a center, not sides.” He added that “to listen is to develop an inner silence.” We must try to see through someone else’s eyes.

I have been in the world of conservation policy, politics, and action for over three decades. Collaborative engagement establishes the building blocks for the politics of problem solving. This does not mean everyone always lines up behind all solutions. But these efforts allow problem-solving conversations to happen—and that is an essential step toward durable success.

 


The Salazar Center is hosting the fifth annual International Symposium on Conservation Impact on October 11-12 in Denver, Colorado. The agenda focuses on nature-positive solutions and how they can catapult our communities towards durable, high-impact outcomes for climate, biodiversity, and human well-being.

Nature-Based Terminology: Understanding the lingo that will get us to natural solutions 

Have you noticed the dizzying number of terms out there to describe the innovative work using nature to solve some of our most pressing environmental challenges? Nature based, natural climate, and nature positive are just a few of the phrases that have entered the vernacular of practitioners across many sectors from conservation to tech and politics. The language around this topic is becoming increasingly complex and nuanced, with multiple terms being used, often interchangeably. But what are the differences between these approaches and why does it matter? 

The Urgency of the Moment  

Our climate and biodiversity are facing dual interlinked crises. Experts have warned that if we do not act quickly on reducing our emissions, the Earth will warm beyond 2.0° C which will put humans and ecosystems in peril. More recently, one study found that about 30% of species have been globally threatened or driven extinct since the year 1500. With international agreements such as the Paris Agreement on Climate Change and the Post-2020 Biodiversity Framework marking major milestones for global cooperation, there is still a need for efforts to be coordinated to best meet these global goals. As more and more research shows that neither problem can be solved in a silo, there has been an urgent call to increase attention and resources on a tool that has been right in front of us all along—nature.  

Conservation strategies that utilize nature can effectively and efficiently deliver dual climate and biodiversity benefits, all while building resilience for humans and ecosystems. As these strategies increase in popularity, so does the terminology being used to describe them. These terms have been quickly adopted by NGOs, corporations, governments, and individuals to communicate their work, which has led to a lack of clarity as to the differences between each one.  

Let’s break down the differences between the three (there are a lot more) terms most commonly used in the field to help you navigate the nature-based vocabulary landscape. 

The umbrella term that includes strategies that use nature to address a problem and deliver climate, biodiversity, economic, and/community health benefits.

The most popularly used term surrounding this issue is Nature-based solutions (NbS). This all-encompassing umbrella term is defined by the United Nations Environment Assembly (UNEA) as “actions to protect, conserve, restore, sustainably use and manage natural or modified terrestrial, freshwater, coastal and marine ecosystems which address social, economic and environmental challenges effectively and adaptively, while simultaneously providing human well-being, ecosystem services, resilience and biodiversity benefits.’’ First used in 2008 by the World Bank, the term has taken off in popularity, becoming mainstream in the worlds of business, conservation, politics, and more. Given the pace and scale of the adoption of this phrase, the term has faced widespread scrutiny from multiple groups. To address the critiques,  measures of accountability are quickly becoming developed by third parties. 

NbS can differ greatly in what they entail and address. Green infrastructure, ecosystem restoration, urban greening, coastal resilience projects can all be examples of NbS, though their ultimate goals may differ. What they have in common is that they are solutions that utilize nature to confront challenges faced by humans and ecosystems. The website Nature-Based Solutions can help you to break down some more of the different terms under the NbS umbrella.

Under the umbrella of NbS, the term Natural-climate solutions is becoming more common as well. These strategies are part of NbS, but are activities that specifically aim to address a climate-driven problem and deliver climate change mitigation, adaptation, and/or resilience benefits, typically focused on emissions reduction or carbon capture through natural ecosystems (Nature4Climate). These actions should have measurable targets directly related to reducing or mitigating carbon emissions using nature, that ultimately contribute to the global Net Zero goal. Examples such as reforestation projects designed for carbon capture and regenerative agriculture that improves soil carbon can be included under the NcS umbrella.  

One scientific study found that NcS have the potential to mitigate up to 37% of our carbon emissions, making them a powerful addition to the suite of tools being used to address climate change and meet the global goal of holding global average temperature rise below 2° C. NcS can link to carbon markets to receive innovative financing mechanisms, or report towards global emissions targets, which has spurred a great deal of interest in their ability to tackle the climate crisis.

It should always be noted that utilizing nature to address climate challenges cannot be a substitute for the rapid decarbonization of our industrial world. These strategies must be used simultaneously if we are to sustain our world as we know it.

In recent years, a new term has entered the dialogue: Nature Positive. As countries have been working to set targets for carbon emissions and sustainable development for years, it has become glaringly obvious that a similar time bound goal for nature to halt and reverse biodiversity loss is necessary. This term was originally introduced in 2021 when a group of experts came together to write "A Nature-Positive World: The Global Goal for Nature.” where they argue for the need to set rigorous and measurable targets for biodiversity recovery. In their paper, the authors introduced the goal of “three measurable temporal objectives: Zero Net Loss of Nature from 2020, Net Positive by 2030, and Full Recovery by 2050” as demonstrated by the image below. 

Think of Nature Positive as the cousin of Net Zero. Where Net Zero specifically focuses on curbing carbon emissions, Nature Positive addresses biodiversity loss. There can be significant and impactful overlap between these strategies when used strategically. There are now many organizations and countries that have incorporated Nature Positive into their messaging and frameworks, the latest being the post-2020 Global Biodiversity Framework.  

You may hear the term nature-positive solutions thrown around as well. Similar to natural climate solutions, nature positive “contributions” or “solutions” are what an individual entity can quantify of the maintenance and improvement of natural processes, ecosystems, and species over time at a project site, that ultimately contribute towards the global goal. Basically, individual entities cannot claim themselves to be “Nature Positive” but can contribute to helping reach this state through quantifiable actions that lead to an increase in biodiversity at a local scale. Language Matters 

While the world has been strongly focused on climate goals for many years, biodiversity is at risk of being left behind. For years Nature-based solutions have drawn criticism from the conservation community, particularly when a project has detrimental impacts on an ecosystem or community, as well as inaccurately recording and claiming their contributions to carbon emissions. However, despite criticisms, the field is rapidly growing, with non-traditionally environmentally minded sectors such as business and tech beginning to invest large sums in nature. It’s critical for people, inside and outside the environmental field, to understand the differences between these terms and the strategies behind them. Just one example is that being able to appreciate the nuances will help consumers recognize egregious greenwashing and empower them to hold the transgressors accountable. It’s Earth Day! What does it mean to you?

Every year on April 22 we celebrate Earth Day, which marks the anniversary of the birth of the modern environmental movement in 1970. CSU understands just how important it is to learn about and engage in sustainability activities so we are celebrating Earth Month from the end of March through April.

The Salazar Center staff took some time to reflect on the question, “What does Earth Day (or month!) mean to you?”

I have worked in what is often referred to as science-based restoration or conservation for over fifteen years. In that space, we rely on data, hypothesis-testing, statistics to drive decision making or implement projects on the ground. Our underlying assumption is that good science will lead to better outcomes. While this is true and necessary, it leaves out a big challenge: people outside of our bubble are often not moved to act or change behavior by data. Sometimes more ephemeral moments can inspire pivotal change. Part of the lore of the history of Earth Day is that it was in part inspired by one of the world’s now most famous photographs – Earthrise.  One photo, albeit a photograph captured through amazing technological wizardry, that raised our environmental consciousness, lit a collective match under our sense of urgency to protect the planet, and contributed to the foundation that Senator Gaylord Nelson leveraged when he founded the first Earth Day in 1970. One photo helped change the way people saw the world and themselves in it.  As I continue to work in this space, this aspect of Earth reminds me that it takes more than science to solve our current problems and we need to bring all sorts of perspectives and tools to the table to create lasting change.

Earth Day is always an energizing and special day to me, as it reminds me of the strong conservation community that is passionate about protecting our planet. I think it is important to remember that anyone can take actions to celebrate and conserve the Earth, regardless of whether you are working in an environmental career field. I often think of my nieces and nephews (all six of them!) and how important it is to see our world through their eyes and protect it for their futures. This year, I am celebrating by waking up in Colombia and exploring the vast tropical biodiversity in that country. What better way to celebrate our Earth than getting out and experiencing all it has to offer?!

Earth day amplifies for me the unequivocal interconnectedness of everything around us. How most organisms -humans included- go about our days, changing ourselves and the world around us in the process, using energy collected from the sun by other beings, and how all the physical elements needed to carry on with such acts of awe come from the Earth itself and ultimately, the Universe. The preciousness of what happens every second on this planet is humbling, inspiring and very encouraging.

Anyone who has ever tried to create social change can tell you, it takes both the head and the heart to make a difference. That’s why I love that the first day of spring and Earth Day are so close to each other. For me, the first day of spring is an opportunity to enjoy the natural environment around me. Those first few days of spring sunshine gets my heart pumping; it’s like my own emergence from winter hibernation.  Then Earth Day offers the opportunity to put my talents and energy to work with the environmental conservation community in a way that feels meaningful and impactful (which usually requires getting my hands a little dirty, literally).  

I often say, it’s not enough to know what needs to change. It’s not enough to be passionate, either. That knowledge and energy needs to be put into action. That’s what Earth Day means to me. Action.

This year I’ll be on vacation in Las Vegas on Earth Day, so I won’t be engaging in quite the same way as I usually do. It turns that, contrary to what is probably a widely shared misconception about this desert destination, Vegas is actually one of the most water-efficient cities in the world. So while I won’t be participating in an official Earth Day event, I will definitely be looking at the Bellagio Fountains with a newfound understanding of how water is conserved and recycled across the city. 

Over the past few years, I’ve found myself thinking more and more about how to balance conservation and recreation—especially given the explosive demand for more opportunities to get outside that came with the COVID-19 pandemic. There are typically lots of different ways to observe Earth Day locally, and there’s this split between clean-ups or restoration-type activities like tree plantings, and activities like group hikes or bike rides. I was at a conference in 2022 that addressed how all recreation activities are “consumptive”—even if you aren’t necessarily hunting or fishing or cutting down your Christmas tree—because that activity is impacting the ecosystem you’re recreating in: hiking or mountain biking on a trail, for example, is going to affect how a nearby elk or fox or hawk moves through the area. Earth Day feels like a great time for us to pause and consider our own impacts in a more multi-faceted way—it’s about the perennial Earth Day (or week or month) calls-to-action like recycling, reducing our reliance on single-use plastics, and saving the rainforest, but it’s also about continually expanding our understanding of how we can do better for the planet.
